Why come

Finale Ligure spans three boroughs and the Adriatic-facing slope above them: Finalmarina and Finalpia on the coast, Finalborgo set back at the junction of the Aquila and Pora streams. The walled inland borough is the historical core, listed as one of the Borghi più belli d'Italia and built as the seat of the Marchesato del Finale under the Del Carretto from the late twelfth century onward. Castel Gavone, the family's stronghold above the walls, was raised by Enrico II Del Carretto in 1181, destroyed in the wars with Genoa, rebuilt in 1451-52 and largely dismantled by the Genoese in 1715 after their conquest.

The seventeenth-century Spanish fort Castel San Giovanni still rings the borgo from a higher ridge. Below, the coastal stretch carries the Bandiera Blu and serves as the launching point for the karst climbing and mountain-biking circuit that has made Finale a year-round destination for outdoor sports since the 1990s.
