Why come

Macerata Feltria is a 1,889-resident Marche borgo on the Pesaro side of the Montefeltro — the borderland region between the Marche, Emilia-Romagna and the Republic of San Marino that produced Federico da Montefeltro (Duke of Urbino, the Renaissance Italian condottiero whose profile in the Piero della Francesca portrait at the Uffizi is the textbook image of the Renaissance prince). The town is layered on three archaeological strata. Roman: founded as Pitinum Pisaurense in the 1st c BC, a moderately important Roman municipium on the road between Pisaurum (Pesaro) and the upper Tiber, with surviving foundations of the forum + amphitheatre + thermal baths visible in the Archaeological Park at the edge of the modern centro. Medieval-Renaissance: rebuilt as a Montefeltro feud after the 8th c, with the 12th-c Pieve di San Cassiano (Romanesque, raised over an earlier Christian basilica) + the Federico da Montefeltro-era fortifications + the surrounding Castello di Pietrarubbia 5 km north. Early modern + contemporary: 19th-c rediscovery of the Roman thermal springs led to the construction of the Terme di Macerata Feltria (1898, modest scale but continuously operating) using sulphurous mineral water for digestive and skin conditions. The town is on the official Borghi più belli d'Italia list. The Montefeltro setting connects it to the famous neighbours: San Leo 15 km north (Cagliostro's prison fortress, BPB), Urbino 30 km south (UNESCO Renaissance ducal town), San Marino 25 km east. The food is Montefeltro-Marche: passatelli in brodo, tagliatelle al ragù di lepre, the local crescia sfogliata (a flatbread), the Bianchello del Metauro DOC white from the Metauro valley, and the Montefeltro Pecorino. The Festa del Patrono San Cassiano (13 August) is the year's main event.
