Why come

Santo Stefano d'Aveto sits at 1,012 meters in the Upper Val d'Aveto, the highest commune in Liguria, forty-five kilometers from Genova on the border with the provinces of Parma, Piacenza and La Spezia. Frederick Barbarossa granted the fief to the Malaspina in the twelfth century; they built the castle on the irregular polygonal base that still rises off the central piazza. The fief passed to the Fieschi and then to the Doria, who held it until 1797. The parish church, the Santuario della Madonna di Guadalupe, displays a painting of the Mexican Madonna donated by Cardinal Giuseppe Doria in 1814 and a bronze medallion of Christopher Columbus mounted on the main door. The ski resort on Monte Bue, with two new chairlifts up to 1,774 meters, is the highest in the Ligurian Apennines and the only one in the region. Lago di Giacopiane, at 1,200 meters, is the warm-season counterpart to the slopes.

December through March is the season of the Monte Bue lifts and the only Ligurian ski runs, with snow held above 1,200 meters when conditions are right. June through September is the warm counterpart, with hikes to Lago di Giacopiane and Monte Maggiorasca and temperatures around 22 to 25 degrees, ten cooler than the coast. April and May, October and November are the shoulder months, when the lifts close, the snow melts, and the village rests; many hotels close. The light at 1,012 meters in February, when the Apennines hold snow north into Emilia, is the local photograph from the castle.
