Why come
Santo Stefano d'Aveto sits at 1,012 meters in the Upper Val d'Aveto, the highest commune in Liguria, forty-five kilometers from Genova on the border with the provinces of Parma, Piacenza and La Spezia. Frederick Barbarossa granted the fief to the Malaspina in the twelfth century; they built the castle on the irregular polygonal base that still rises off the central piazza. The fief passed to the Fieschi and then to the Doria, who held it until 1797.
The parish church, the Santuario della Madonna di Guadalupe, displays a painting of the Mexican Madonna donated by Cardinal Giuseppe Doria in 1814 and a bronze medallion of Christopher Columbus mounted on the main door. The ski resort on Monte Bue, with two new chairlifts up to 1,774 meters, is the highest in the Ligurian Apennines and the only one in the region. Lago di Giacopiane, at 1,200 meters, is the warm-season counterpart to the slopes.
