Why come
Darfo Boario Terme stands at the lower end of the Valle Camonica, a few kilometres north of Lake Iseo, where the Oglio leaves the mountains for the plain. The commune name joins Darfo, the capoluogo, with the spa hamlet of Boario Terme. The thermal water was already in use in the 18th century; Doctor Biffi called it the most active in Lombardy in 1857, and the first spa building with its Art Nouveau dome went up in 1906.
The Comuni Virtuosi recognition reflects later environmental commitments rather than the older history. The Parco delle Incisioni Rupestri di Luine sits inside the commune: more than a hundred rock surfaces engraved by the Camunni over thousands of years, part of the wider Valle Camonica UNESCO site that became the first Italian world heritage entry in 1979. The Castello di Gorzone, a Federici fortress on a spur above the centre, dates from the 13th century. The Tempietto di Capo di Lago, a small medieval church on a rock above the river, closes the lakeside view.
