Why come
Fonni sits at 1,000 meters on the northern slope of the Gennargentu, the highest comune in Sardinia. Punta La Marmora, the island's summit at 1,834 meters, rises south of the town. Ski lifts climb from Monte Spada to Bruncu Spina at 1,829 meters, and on the rare years the snow holds, this is the only operating ski station on the island.
The Santuario della Madonna dei Martiri occupies a large square outside the village, ringed by cumbessias, the small pilgrim houses that fill during the Festa dei Martiri on the first Sunday of June. The convent was donated to the Observant Franciscans in 1610 by Don Stefano Melis. The upper church and crypt were built between 1702 and 1706.
The parish church of San Giovanni Battista in the centro storico keeps Gothic elements from a sixteenth-century rebuild. Fonni hosts an autumn Cortes Apertas weekend in December as part of the Autunno in Barbagia circuit. The town is part of the Parco Nazionale del Gennargentu.
