Why come

Jerzu sitson the eastern flank of the Ogliastra interior, under the limestone wall of Monte Corongiu. The village name first appears in a 1130 document recording a donation of vineyards. By the 16th century Jerzu wine was being shipped across the Alps. The town is one of the capitals of Cannonau, Sardinia's signature grenache-family red, and the only zone where the wine can label itself with the Jerzu sub-zone designation under the Cannonau di Sardegna DOC. The Antichi Poderi Jerzu cooperative, founded in 1950 and now grouping around 350 growers, vinifies most of the local crop. The Sagra del Vino on the first Sunday of August fills the streets with carts, traditional dress and tastings. Above the village, Monte Corongiu rises to nearly a thousand meters, with a Punic necropolis on its slopes and the best panorama in Ogliastra from the summit.

April through June is the best window: vineyards in leaf, mild temperatures at 450 meters, and trails on Monte Corongiu open without summer heat. September through November is the second window, lining up with the Cannonau harvest in late September and the cooler autumn light. Summer touches the mid-thirties and the village empties between two and six in the afternoon. The Sagra del Vino on the first Sunday of August is the exception, packing the streets for one weekend. Winter is quiet, with cold nights and most agriturismi closed between December and March.
