Why come
Minervino Murge sitson two hills of the Alta Murgia, on the western edge of the Murgia plateau, in the Parco Nazionale dell'Alta Murgia. The view earned the town the nickname Balcone di Puglia: from the ridge, the eye runs east across the Murgia limestone toward the Gargano and the Adriatic, west across cultivated fields to Monte Vulture in Basilicata, and north down the Ofanto valley. The Norman castle, remodeled by later baronial owners, still holds towers and bastions above the centro storico, alongside the fifteenth-century Torre di Pirro del Balzo, built between 1460 and 1490 when the territory came to Pirro del Balzo as part of his wife's dowry. The Grotta di San Michele, a karst cavity formed roughly two million years ago, is a sanctuary of the Archangel Michael, parallel to the larger Monte Sant'Angelo cult on the Gargano. The cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was the bishop's seat from the eleventh century until the diocese was suppressed in 1818. Olive oil, almonds and grain define the rural economy.

April through June and September through October are the months the Alta Murgia plateau runs best. The wildflower steppe peaks in May, almond blossom comes earlier in February, and the Ofanto valley below stays mild through autumn. July and August push past thirty-five degrees on the limestone with little shade; the centro storico empties between two and five and the panoramic belvedere is best at dawn or dusk. The olive harvest opens in late October and runs into December. November through March is quiet and cool, with the Balcone catching long winter light and a clear view of the snow on Monte Vulture in Basilicata.
