Why come

Samugheo is the documented capital of Sardinian textile weaving — a 2,757-resident Mandrolisai borgo 35 km east of Oristano in the granite-soil heart of inland Sardinia, where the traditional pibiones (woven knot-stitch) tapestry-making tradition has been continuously practiced for at least 500 years and where 20+ active weaver-artisans still work on traditional pedal looms in workshops scattered through the centro. The institutional centre is the MURATS — Museo Unico Regionale dell'Arte Tessile Sarda, opened 2008 in the former Convento dei Cappuccini, with 600+ historical pieces and contemporary commissions documenting the full range of Sardinian textile traditions (Samugheo's pibiones, Atzara's a litzos lace, Mogoro's pinnetes carpets, Cabras's vela latina sail-weaving). The biennial Tessingiu festival (next 2026) is the most important Italian woven-arts contemporary exhibition. The borgo itself: granite-stone-house centro, the Chiesa di San Sebastiano (16th-c), the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta (parish, 17th-c restoration), and the Festa di San Basilio Magno on 2 January (with the Sa Pippia de Maju procession bringing the entire community out in traditional costume — including the woven costumes from the local workshops). Samugheo is a Borgo Autentico (the small-village quality mark) and a Città del Vino — the surrounding Mandrolisai DOC zone (Cannonau-Monica-Bovale blend, distinctive granite-soil minerality) extends across 7 villages including Atzara, Sorgono, Tonara, Desulo, and Samugheo holds the largest share of the production by volume. The food is inland-Sardinian: porceddu (roast suckling pig), pane carasau, su gattou (almond brittle), seadas, pecorino sardo, and obviously the Mandrolisai DOC red. The Barbagia di Belvì + Gennargentu mountains rise to the east, the Tirso river valley runs west toward the Sinis archaeological coast (Tharros + Cabras Bronze Age statues 50 km west).
